Mnemonics
Recognizing the challenge in learning especially the ideograms, or kanji, I sought out mnemonic techniques. That is, methods that facilitate their memorization in a creative (hence the name of this page and course), fun, and exciting way.
Thus, I used different sources as inspiration, such as books and foreign websites, which provided me with ideas to decode and better understand these kanji, imagining them as little bricks that fit together and generate new meanings. Above all, I never rely on simple rote memorization to learn these characters, as I’ve seen taught in different methods since my adolescence. This way, learning becomes really difficult, and all of it would seem like just “a bunch of strokes”.
Over time, I myself got the hang of always creating new stories, images, characters, associations in general, for each little set of “strokes” that appear in the infamous kanji… and even to remember the meanings of Japanese words in general, even when they are not composed of ideograms.
This is useful because, unlike Spanish, which has a vocabulary very similar to Portuguese, or even French and Italian (all Latin, Romance languages); and even English has some words similar to our language (like ideologia and ideology, máscara and mask, masquerade, etc.); Japanese has almost nothing very similar to Portuguese and other Western languages… even though it borrows some words from English, “Japanized” in a way that is often unrecognizable to those who are not used to it. Of course, I also teach how to “translate” and “get the hang of” these adaptations…
So, come with me and I’ll take you on this special journey to the East!
